Pylon Signs — Freeway-Scale Visibility from 500 Feet and Beyond
Tall freestanding pylon structures engineered for shopping centers, gas stations, and highway-adjacent properties. Multi-tenant illuminated cabinets, engineered foundations, seismic and wind-load calcs — fabricated, permitted, and installed by one C-45 licensed team in Gardena.
What Are Pylon Signs?
Engineered, steel-pole-supported sign structures that elevate a lighted cabinet assembly 25 to 70+ feet above grade. Built for one purpose: to be read from half a mile away at 65 mph.
Anatomy of a pylon sign
A pylon is four engineered assemblies stacked vertically. Every one of them lives or dies on the structural calcs that prove it can survive a 110 mph gust and a magnitude-7 quake.
-
1
Engineered foundation
Wet-stamped reinforced concrete pier, sized by a California PE for soil class, wind zone, and seismic category. Anchor bolt template embedded in the pour.
-
2
Steel pylon structure
Heavy-wall steel tube (commonly 8"–16" OD) welded to a base plate. Powder-coated or painted with Mathews Paint to match the cabinets above.
-
3
Multi-tenant cabinets
Stacked illuminated cabinets with interchangeable tenant panels. Flex-face or polycarbonate graphics, UL-listed LED arrays, gasketed for weather.
-
4
Top-of-structure illumination
Primary branding cabinet at the very top for max visibility. Often paired with a time-of-day or LED message center below it.
What Pylon Signs Cost in LA
Case-by-case — we quote firm after a site visit or artwork review.
Pricing is case-by-case. Every pylon sign project is custom — height, tenant panel count, single or double face, illumination, foundation — all affect cost. We provide a firm quote after a site visit or artwork review.
Permits are a fixed $1,500 — our flat fee for permit runners, drawings, and city coordination. City fees (plan check, inspection, use permits) are billed at cost with zero markup and paid directly by the client. See Sign Permits for the full policy.
Standard lead time is 2–3 weeks for production after permit approval. Complex fabrication may add time; we tell you upfront.
Three Ways to Configure a Pylon Sign
The right structure depends on cabinet width, tenant count, and what the structural engineer calculates for your wind zone.
Single-Pole
One heavy steel column supporting the cabinet(s). The go-to for narrower cabinets and sites with tight right-of-way footprint. Cleanest profile.
Dual-Pole
Two structural steel columns distribute load — required for wider cabinets, double-face pylons, and most multi-tenant applications. Stiffer in wind.
Multi-Tenant Stack
Tall vertical cabinet stack with one panel per tenant, plus a primary property cabinet on top. The standard for anchor-tenant shopping centers.
Concept to Lit Pylon in 4 Steps
Pylons carry the heaviest permit and engineering load of any sign type. Expect extra time for structural calcs, foundation inspections, and crane-day logistics.
Design & Survey
Site lines from the road, sight-triangle review, soil assumption, tenant-panel layout, photoreal rendering at the actual setback.
Permit, Engineering & Foundation
California PE wet-stamped calcs, foundation schedule, wind & seismic analysis, city submittal, variance if needed. Footing inspection scheduled.
Fabrication
Weld steel pole, build cabinets, wire LED arrays, prep flex-face graphics, paint, QA-light the entire assembly in our Gardena shop.
Install & Inspection
Foundation pour + cure, crane-set the pylon, bolt & plumb, electrical hookup, city final inspection, lights on.
Six Reasons Anchor Tenants Demand Pylons
500ft+ Readability
At 30+ feet tall, a pylon is legible long before a driver reaches the turn-in. That extra reaction distance is worth thousands in captured traffic.
Freeway Visibility
Purpose-built to be read at 65 mph from adjacent highways. The only sign type that reliably pulls off-ramp traffic into your lot.
Multi-Tenant Parity
Every tenant gets the same panel width and brightness. No favoritism, no lease disputes. A built-in argument for higher anchor-tenant rents.
Brand Marker
A tall pylon becomes a landmark. "Meet me by the red sign" is the kind of verbal wayfinding no storefront sign can deliver.
Engineered to CBC
California PE wet-stamp, wind and seismic calcs, inspected foundation. Every pylon we build is permitted to its entire intended 30+ year lifespan.
Changeable Panels
Tenant turnover is a one-day job, not a re-permitting event. Swap a panel, update the roster, keep the structure for decades.
Properties That Demand Pylon Signs
Shopping Centers
Anchor-tenant name on top, 4–8 in-line tenant panels below. The standard pylon configuration for every grocery-anchored center.
Gas Stations
Fuel price display, brand logo, convenience-store call-out. Freeway-visibility pylons are what pull a driver from a half-mile out to the pump.
Freeway Hotels
Flag-brand hotels off the interstate live and die by freeway pylon visibility. Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Best Western franchise programs approve these builds.
Big-Box Retail
Home improvement, warehouse clubs, auto parts chains. Corporate design standards often require a minimum pylon height for site approval.
Auto Dealerships
OEM-approved pylon programs with franchise-spec cabinets and LED message panels. Often 40′+ and visible across an adjacent freeway.
Truck Stops & Travel Plazas
Full-height pylons with fuel prices, brand logo, and amenity icons. The tallest legally permitted structures along I-5, I-15, and I-10 corridors.
When a Pylon Wins — and When It Doesn't
We build monument, pylon, pole, and wall signs. Here's an honest look at when a pylon is the right call — and when something else fits your site better.
Choose a pylon if Yes
Consider another option if Maybe not
- You only need ground-level entry identity — see monument signs.
- You want simpler mid-height roadside visibility — see pole signs.
- Your storefront is in a strip mall with a shared pylon — see channel letters.
- You want a reface-friendly wall cabinet — see cabinet signs.
- You need programmable changing messages — see LED displays.

Frequently Asked Questions
How tall can a pylon sign be in Los Angeles?
Pricing is case-by-case — final price depends on height, tenant panel count, single or double face, illumination, foundation. Permits are a fixed $1,500 flat fee. Standard lead time is 2–3 weeks for production after permit approval. See the pricing section above for full details, or request a free quote.
Can you add or change tenant panels on an existing pylon sign?
Yes. We regularly add, remove, and replace tenant panels on existing pylon structures. Tenant panel changes are typically completed within 1 to 3 business days. Pricing depends on panel size and whether the new tenant requires an illumination retrofit.
Do pylon signs require structural engineering and permits?
Yes. All pylon signs in Los Angeles require both a sign permit and structural engineering calculations signed by a licensed California structural engineer. A building permit for the concrete foundation is also required. Our team manages the entire permit process including PE-stamped drawings and inspection scheduling.

Low-profile ground-level entry markers. The right call when visibility is close-range and architectural integration matters.
Pole Signs
Mid-height single-pole signs. Budget-friendlier alternative when you need roadside visibility but not freeway scale.
