Pole Signs — Mid-Height Roadside Visibility with Budget Discipline
Single-pole illuminated cabinet signs engineered for gas stations, hotels, and roadside retail across Southern California. The practical middle ground between a ground-level monument and a freeway-scale pylon — sized right for arterials, simpler to permit, faster to install.
What Are Pole Signs?
Freestanding signs mounted on a single visible steel pole — typically 10 to 25 feet tall — with an illuminated cabinet at the top. Less structural demand than a pylon, more reach than a monument, and a sweet spot for the vast majority of roadside businesses.
Anatomy of a pole sign
Four pieces, each sized correctly for the pole-sign scale. Simpler to engineer than a pylon, cheaper to fabricate, faster to install — all without sacrificing readability.
-
1
Single-pole structure
Schedule-40 or heavier steel tube, typically 6"–10" OD. Powder-coated or Mathews-painted to match the cabinet. Simpler than a pylon's dual-pole rig.
-
2
Concrete footing
Reinforced concrete pier sized to CBC for your wind zone. Usually smaller than a pylon footing because the structure is shorter and lighter.
-
3
Illuminated cabinet face
Aluminum cabinet with flex-face or polycarbonate face, internal UL-listed LED array. Single-face or double-face. Gasketed, drainable, built to 10-year warranty.
-
4
Electrical whip
120V feed from the building service runs up inside the pole (or on an approved external whip) into the cabinet PSU. Fully UL-listed and inspected.
What Pole Signs Cost in LA
Case-by-case — we quote firm after a site visit or artwork review.
Pricing is case-by-case. Every pole sign project is custom — height, cabinet size, single or double face, foundation depth — all affect cost. We provide a firm quote after a site visit or artwork review.
Permits are a fixed $1,500 — our flat fee for permit runners, drawings, and city coordination. City fees (plan check, inspection, use permits) are billed at cost with zero markup and paid directly by the client. See Sign Permits for the full policy.
Standard lead time is 2–3 weeks for production after permit approval. Complex fabrication may add time; we tell you upfront.
Three Ways to Configure a Pole Sign
Pole signs come in a small handful of proven configurations. The right one depends on how many directions the sign needs to be readable from, and whether you want programmable content.
Single-Face
One illuminated face visible from one direction — right for corner lots or one-way streets. Lowest cost, simplest install, cleanest back side.
Double-Face
Identical illuminated faces on both sides — essential for two-way arterials and divided roadways. Two face assemblies share one cabinet body.
LED Programmable Face
Traditional illuminated cabinet on top with an LED message center below — schedule board for church, fuel prices for gas, promos for QSR. Remote programmable.
Design to Lit Pole Sign in 4 Steps
Pole signs carry real engineering weight — a 20′ structure with a 50 sq ft cabinet is a structural load. Expect full permit and foundation phases, but lighter than a pylon.
Design & Survey
Site walk, setback measurement, cabinet sizing to match road speed, photoreal rendering at your exact site line.
Permit, Engineering & Foundation
Wet-stamped structural calcs, pier depth, anchor-bolt schedule, city sign + building + electrical permits. Foundation inspection coordinated.
Fabrication
Cut and weld pole, build cabinet, wire LED modules, paint to Mathews spec, QA-light the full assembly in our Gardena shop.
Install & Inspection
Pour footing, crane-set the pole, mount cabinet, connect 120V, run through city final — lights on the same day or next.
Six Reasons Pole Signs Hit the Sweet Spot
Right-Sized Visibility
Legible from 300–700 feet. Tall enough to clear parking and small trees, short enough to pass most zoning without a variance fight.
Budget-Friendly
A pole sign delivers 80% of the visibility of a pylon at 40–50% of the installed cost. Best ROI of any elevated sign type for most roadside businesses.
Simple to Reface
Swap the translucent face in under an hour — no re-permit, no crane. Great for businesses that rebrand, sell, or change fuel suppliers.
Low Energy LED
Modern LED modules pull 60–80% less electricity than the fluorescent tubes they replace. Monthly power bill pays back the fabrication within 4–6 years.
Flex-Face Graphics
Full-color digital printing on flex-face or polycarbonate means any logo, any gradient, any brand color — no fabricated-letter complexity.
LED Retrofit Ready
We convert older fluorescent pole signs to LED in a single day — retrofit only, keep the cabinet, cut the power bill by 60%+ instantly.
Businesses That Rely on Pole Signs
Gas Stations
Brand logo cabinet up top, LED fuel-price display below. The roadside-pole configuration every major oil brand approves.
Hotels & Motels
Flag-brand hotels along arterials use pole signs when the freeway pylon isn't warranted. Marriott Fairfield, IHG Holiday Inn, Best Western standard.
Auto Repair & Service
Tire shops, muffler chains, transmission specialists, detail shops. Pole signs communicate "professional, established, here to stay" from 500 feet out.
Restaurants & Cafés
Drive-through QSR, sit-down family restaurants, coffee stops. Pole signs pull cars from the next signal up without requiring freeway scale.
Car Washes
Pole signs with open/closed indicators and LED price-board panels. Catches cars mid-approach on busy arterial strips.
Fast Food
Burger chains, taco stands, chicken joints, donut shops. Pole signs are the default roadside billboard for every independent QSR in SoCal.
When a Pole Sign Wins — and When It Doesn't
We build monument, pylon, pole, and wall signs. Here's an honest look at when a pole sign is the right call — and when something else fits your site better.
Choose a pole sign if Yes
Consider another option if Maybe not
- You need ground-level entry identity — see monument signs.
- You need freeway-scale visibility (40′+) — see pylon signs.
- You only need a wall-mounted storefront identifier — see channel letters.
- You want a reface-friendly wall cabinet — see cabinet signs.
- You need full-motion programmable content — see LED displays.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a pole sign and a pylon sign?
Pricing is case-by-case — final price depends on height, cabinet size, single or double face, foundation depth. Permits are a fixed $1,500 flat fee. Standard lead time is 2–3 weeks for production after permit approval. See the pricing section above for full details, or request a free quote.
Can you convert my old fluorescent pole sign to LED?
Yes. LED conversion is one of our most popular pole sign services. We remove old fluorescent ballasts and tubes, install premium LED modules, and upgrade wiring as needed. LED conversion reduces energy consumption by 50 to 80 percent and can typically be completed in a single day without pulling new permits.
