Pricing is case-by-case. Every LED retrofit project is custom — fixture count, existing technology (neon/fluorescent), voltage, access difficulty — all affect cost. We provide a firm quote after a site visit or review of your existing signage.

Standard lead time is 2–3 weeks once scope is confirmed. Complex projects may add time; we tell you upfront.

Overview

Why Convert to LED?

If your commercial sign is still running on neon tubes or fluorescent lighting, you are paying significantly more for electricity than you need to, dealing with more frequent maintenance and repairs, and getting dimmer output than modern technology can deliver. LED retrofits solve all three problems at once, and they do it while keeping your existing sign structure intact.

LED technology has advanced dramatically in the past decade. Today’s commercial-grade LED modules produce brighter, more uniform light output than neon or fluorescent lighting ever could. They consume 50 to 70 percent less electricity. They last 50,000 to 100,000 hours compared to 8,000 to 15,000 hours for neon and fluorescent. And they require virtually no maintenance over their rated lifespan because there are no tubes to replace, no ballasts to fail, and no gases to leak.

For businesses that operate signs for extended hours — restaurants, hotels, gas stations, convenience stores, retail shops, and entertainment venues — the energy savings alone often pay for the LED conversion within 1 to 3 years. After that payback period, the savings flow directly to your bottom line for the remaining decades of the LED’s service life.

How LED Retrofits Work

An LED retrofit replaces only the internal lighting components of your sign while keeping the existing sign cabinet, channel letters, face panels, and structure. Here is what the process involves:

First, our technician opens the sign and removes all existing lighting components: neon tubes and transformers, or fluorescent tubes and ballasts, along with the associated wiring. These old components are properly disposed of or recycled according to environmental regulations (particularly important for neon tubes that contain mercury).

Next, we install new UL Listed LED modules throughout the sign. The modules are spaced and positioned to provide even, consistent illumination across every letter, panel, or section. We select the appropriate color temperature (warm white, neutral white, cool white, or color-matched) to match your brand requirements. Each module is securely mounted and wired to a commercial-grade LED power supply that converts your building’s AC power to the low-voltage DC that LED modules require.

Finally, we reconnect the sign to your electrical service, test all illumination for brightness, uniformity, and color accuracy, and verify that timers and photocells are functioning correctly. The entire process is typically completed in a single day, and your sign is back to full operation before business the next morning.

Energy Savings You Can Measure

The energy savings from an LED retrofit are not hypothetical. They show up on your electricity bill the very first month. Here are typical savings based on common sign types we convert:

A standard set of neon channel letters draws approximately 400 to 800 watts. After LED conversion, the same set of letters draws 100 to 200 watts — a 60 to 75 percent reduction. For a sign that operates 12 hours per day, 365 days per year at an average California electricity rate of $0.25 per kWh, that translates to $130 to $260 per year in energy savings from a single sign.

Larger signs see proportionally larger savings. A fluorescent cabinet sign or light box drawing 1,000 to 2,000 watts can be retrofitted to LED at 200 to 500 watts. A pylon sign with multiple fluorescent cabinets drawing 3,000+ watts total can be reduced to under 1,000 watts. For multi-location businesses or property managers with portfolios of signs, the aggregate annual savings can be substantial.

We include a detailed energy savings calculation with every LED retrofit proposal, using your actual sign specifications, operating hours, and local electricity rates. This gives you a clear payback timeline and lifetime savings projection before you commit to the conversion.

Materials

Brighter, More Uniform Output

Energy savings are only part of the story. LED retrofits also produce a visibly better sign. Neon tubes and fluorescent tubes create “hot spots” (bright areas directly around the tube) and “dead zones” (dim areas between tubes). As these tubes age, the hot spots become even more pronounced and the dead zones get dimmer, creating an uneven, patchy appearance that makes your sign look old and neglected.

LED modules, when properly spaced and positioned, create uniform illumination across the entire sign face. There are no hot spots or dead zones. The light output is consistent from edge to edge and top to bottom. This uniform brightness makes text more readable from a distance, makes colors more vibrant, and gives the entire sign a clean, professional, modern appearance.

LED modules also maintain their brightness much longer than neon or fluorescent. While neon tubes lose noticeable brightness within the first 2 to 3 years of operation, quality LED modules maintain at least 70 percent of their original brightness at 50,000 hours — which is over 11 years of 12-hour-per-day operation.

Deep Dive

Longer Lifespan and Lower Maintenance

The rated lifespan of commercial LED modules is 50,000 to 100,000 hours. Compare that to neon (8,000 to 15,000 hours before tubes need replacement) and fluorescent (10,000 to 20,000 hours before tubes and ballasts need replacement). This means LED modules last 5 to 10 times longer than the lighting they replace.

More importantly, LED modules have no moving parts, no filaments to break, no gas to leak, and no ballasts to fail. The failure mode for LEDs is a very gradual dimming over many years, not the sudden failure that characterizes neon tube cracks and ballast burnouts. This means far fewer emergency service calls, far less downtime with your sign dark, and far lower maintenance costs over the life of the sign.

Reference

UL Listed Components

Every LED module, power supply, and component we install carries a UL listing — the safety certification required by building codes, insurance companies, and fire marshals. UL Listed components have been tested for electrical safety, fire resistance, and environmental durability. Using non-UL-Listed LED components in a commercial sign is a code violation that can result in failed inspections, insurance claim denials, and potential liability exposure.

We source our LED modules directly from established manufacturers who maintain UL listings on their commercial sign products. We do not use cheap, uncertified modules regardless of the price difference, because the safety and legal risks are not worth the savings. When we retrofit your sign, you receive documentation of the UL listings for every component installed.

Overview

Types of Signs We Retrofit

Channel Letter Conversions

Channel letters are the most common sign type we retrofit. Whether front lit, back lit, or combination lit, we replace the internal neon or fluorescent tubes with LED modules positioned for optimal face illumination. Front lit channel letters receive modules aimed at the translucent face. Back lit (reverse) channel letters receive modules aimed at the wall behind the letter to create the halo effect. Edge lit and combination lit letters receive modules positioned for their specific illumination pattern.

Cabinet Sign and Light Box Conversions

Cabinet signs and light boxes are ideal candidates for LED retrofit. These signs typically used rows of fluorescent tubes that created visible banding patterns on the face. LED modules eliminate the banding and create smooth, even illumination across the entire face panel. We also replace yellowed or damaged face panels during the retrofit when needed, giving the sign a completely refreshed appearance.

Pole Sign and Pylon Sign Conversions

Pole signs and pylon signs often contain multiple fluorescent cabinets at heights that make maintenance expensive and disruptive. Converting these signs to LED dramatically reduces the frequency of service calls at height, which saves on both maintenance costs and business disruption. LED retrofits for elevated signs pay for themselves even faster than ground-level signs because of the eliminated aerial service costs.

Monument Sign Conversions

Monument signs with internal illumination benefit from LED conversion in the same way as cabinet signs. We replace the internal fluorescent or neon lighting with properly spaced LED modules, improving brightness and uniformity while cutting energy consumption significantly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much energy will I save with an LED retrofit?

Most businesses see 50 to 70 percent energy savings after converting to LED. The exact savings depend on your existing sign type, size, operating hours, and local electricity rate. We include a detailed energy savings calculation with every proposal so you can see your payback period before deciding.

Is an LED retrofit cheaper than buying a new sign?

In most cases, yes. A retrofit replaces only the lighting components while keeping your existing cabinet, letters, and structure. This typically costs 30 to 50 percent less than a complete replacement. If the sign structure is deteriorated, full replacement may be the better investment. We assess the structure and give you both options with transparent pricing.

Can you keep my existing sign cabinet and just change the lighting?

That is exactly what an LED retrofit does. We remove old neon tubes, fluorescent tubes, ballasts, and transformers, then install new LED modules and power supplies inside your existing sign. The exterior appearance stays the same but the lighting is dramatically brighter, more uniform, and far more energy efficient.

How long does an LED retrofit take?

Most retrofits are completed in a single day. Channel letters take 2 to 4 hours. Cabinet signs take 1 to 3 hours. Larger projects with multiple signs may take 1 to 2 days. We schedule work to minimize disruption and can perform retrofits during off-hours if preferred.
