Overview

What Are Neon Signs?

Authentic neon is hand-bent glass tubing filled with a noble gas (neon, argon, or a mixture), energized by a transformer. Nothing in modern lighting produces the same warm, volumetric glow — it's craft, physics, and atmosphere all at once.

Anatomy of a neon sign

Every neon sign is a hand-built electrical circuit sealed inside glass. Four components come together — and we bend, pump, and test each one ourselves.

  1. 1

    Hand-bent glass tube

Borosilicate tubing heated and shaped by hand on a ribbon burner to match your exact artwork. 8mm–15mm diameter.

  2. 2

    Noble gas (neon / argon)

Tube is vacuum-pumped and filled with pure noble gas. Neon glows classic warm red-orange; argon + phosphor delivers blues, pinks, whites, and the full color range.

  3. 3

    Electrode terminals

Sealed metal electrodes at each end carry current into the gas. High-quality electrodes are the difference between a 5-year sign and a 25-year sign.

  4. 4

    Low-voltage transformer

UL Listed electronic transformer steps line voltage up to the operating voltage of the tube. Modern units run cool, quiet, and efficient.

Three Ways to Display Neon

How the glass is presented changes the entire feeling of the piece. We recommend the mount style once we understand the room, the wall, and the mood.

Wall-Mount on Panel

Hand-bent glass mounted to an aluminum or painted backer and hung like a framed piece. The clean modern default — works on brick, drywall, wood paneling. Easy to relocate.

Window Hanger

Suspended behind the storefront glass with monofilament or rigid standoffs. Visible from the sidewalk, protected from weather, and creates the classic glow-from-within storefront look.

Suspended Interior

Hung from ceiling cables or rigid standoffs, floating above a bar, booth, or stage. The showpiece mount — photos well, becomes the room's focal point, and solves wall-space problems.

Process

Sketch to Lit Glass in 4 Steps

Every neon piece follows the same craft process. You see — and approve — how the bends will look before the torch ever touches glass.

1 Week 1

Design

We translate your artwork or word mark into a full-scale neon pattern, accounting for tube diameter, color breaks, and electrode placement.

2 Week 2

Glass Bending Proof

Hand-bent sample bends or digital proof showing every curve and color. You sign off before we pump and seal anything.

3 Weeks 2–4

Fabrication & Testing

Glass bending, electrode sealing, vacuum pump, gas fill, burn-in testing, and backer/mount fabrication — all in-house.

4 Day Of

Install

Licensed electricians mount the piece, connect the transformer, verify the circuit, and fire it up. Most interior installs take a few hours.

Why Choose Neon

Six Reasons the Real Glass Still Wins

Authentic Warm Glow

Neon gas glowing through glass produces depth and halo you simply cannot fake with LED strip. The "real thing" look that patrons instinctively recognize.

Hand-Crafted Artisanal

Every bend is shaped by a human on a ribbon burner. No two signs are identical. It's craft, not manufacturing — and it shows.

Atmospheric & Photogenic

Neon defines the mood of bars, music venues, and restaurants — and customers post it to Instagram before they order. Built-in marketing.

Full Color Range

Neon gas for warm reds and oranges. Argon + phosphor coatings for blues, pinks, whites, greens, purples. Any brand color, any mood.

Timeless Aesthetic

Neon has looked cool for a hundred years. It outlasts every trend. A piece you install today still reads right in 2050.

Long Service Life

Well-made glass neon runs 20–30 years with occasional transformer swaps. Modern electronic transformers don't buzz and barely sip power.

Where It Shines

Businesses That Live on Neon

Bars & Cocktail Lounges

The original neon customer. Beer signs, cocktail signs, vintage-word pieces — the atmospheric anchor of any drinking establishment.

Restaurants & Diners

Diner-style "OPEN" signs, family-style trattorias, late-night taco shops, and flagship restaurants that want a signature visual.

Tattoo & Piercing Studios

Ink, needles, and neon — the trinity. Shop names, old-school flash, heart-and-dagger pieces. The industry standard signage.

Barbershops

The neon barber-pole lineage. Modern grooming lounges, traditional shops, and everything in between — neon is the craft-respect signal.

Boutique Hotels

Lobby showpieces, rooftop bars, pool-deck beacons. Neon turns a check-in desk into a photo-op and adds decades of atmosphere.

Music Venues & Vintage Shops

Concert halls, record stores, vintage clothing shops, diners, art galleries — anywhere the vibe is more important than the light level.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between glass neon and LED neon?

Pricing is case-by-case — final price depends on tube length, color count, glass vs LED neon, transformer count, mounting. Permits are a fixed $1,500 flat fee. Standard lead time is 2–3 weeks for production after permit approval. See the pricing section above for full details, or request a free quote.

What colors are available for neon signs?

Traditional glass neon offers a wide range of colors. Neon gas produces the classic red-orange glow. Argon gas with mercury produces blue, which can be modified by using colored phosphor coatings on the inside of the glass tubes to produce green, pink, purple, yellow, white, and many other colors. LED neon is available in virtually any color, including RGB color-changing options that can display thousands of colors from a single tube. We can match specific brand colors using either technology.
