Overview

What Are Back Lit Channel Letters?

Three-dimensional individually fabricated letters with a solid (non-illuminated) front face. LED modules are mounted inside the letter and aimed rearward, projecting a soft ring of light onto the wall behind each letter. The result is a subtle halo effect — visible but never shouting.

Anatomy of a halo-lit letter

The effect looks like magic. The engineering is precise: solid face, open back, rear-firing LEDs, and a measured gap between the letter and the wall.

  1. 1

    Solid aluminum face

0.063"–0.080" aluminum, CNC cut to letter shape. Mathews Paint finish for exact PMS brand color — crisp and sculptural by day.

  2. 2

    Aluminum return

Side wall of the letter, typically 3"–5" deep. Houses the LEDs and protects them from weather. Painted to match the face.

  3. 3

    Rear-facing LED modules

UL Listed, commercial-grade LEDs mounted inside the letter, aimed at the wall behind. Calibrated spacing produces an even halo.

  4. 4

    Standoff mount (1–2")

Stainless hardware holds the letter 1" to 2" off the wall. Close enough for a defined halo, far enough to let the glow bloom.

Mounting

Three Ways to Mount a Halo Lit Set

The mounting method determines how crisp the halo looks and how the landlord reviews your permit. We pick the right method for your facade after a site survey.

Precision Standoff Pins

Each letter floats 1–2" off the wall on stainless standoffs. Produces the cleanest, most defined halo — the gold-standard halo mount. Requires wall access for wire routing behind each letter.

Raceway Mount

Letters attached to a painted raceway box that houses the wiring. Single wall penetration, faster install, permit-friendly. Halo is slightly softer than standoff but often preferred by landlords and strip-mall owners.

Flush / Minimal Mount

Letters set very close to the wall (1/2"–3/4") for a subtle, understated halo. Reads as a shadow-edge glow rather than a full ring. Used when a quieter effect or tight architectural profile is required.

Why Choose Back Lit

Six Reasons LA's Upscale Brands Pick Halo Lit

Signature Halo Effect

Soft ambient glow radiates from behind each letter. Readable at night, sophisticated at every angle. No other sign type delivers this look.

Upscale Brand Presence

Hotels, law firms, corporate HQs, and luxury retail pick halo lit because it quietly signals quality without competing with the architecture.

Sculptural Daytime Read

Solid painted faces give you a crisp, dimensional letterform in daylight. Your brand works 24 hours — not just at night.

Efficient LED Tech

Commercial-grade LEDs rated 50,000–100,000 hours. Uses ~80% less energy than neon while delivering a cleaner, more even glow.

Finish Flexibility

Painted aluminum, brushed aluminum, satin stainless, or bronze — pick a face finish that matches your architectural intent.

Code Compliant

UL Listed components + engineered standoff mounting = approved in every SoCal jurisdiction we've permitted in.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between back lit and front lit channel letters?

Pricing is case-by-case — final price depends on letter count, size, face/return material, standoff depth, mounting method. Permits are a fixed $1,500 flat fee. Standard lead time is 2–3 weeks for production after permit approval. See the pricing section above for full details, or request a free quote.

What businesses are best suited for back lit channel letters?

Back lit channel letters are ideal for businesses that want an upscale, sophisticated appearance. They are commonly used by hotels, high-end restaurants, law firms, medical offices, financial institutions, luxury retail stores, and corporate offices. The subtle halo glow conveys elegance and professionalism, making them a favorite for businesses in competitive commercial areas throughout Los Angeles.

What materials are used for back lit channel letter faces?

Back lit channel letter faces are typically made from aluminum sheet (painted with Mathews Paint for exact brand color matching) or opaque acrylic. Unlike front lit letters, the face material is solid and non-translucent because the light projects backward, not forward. Some designs use brushed aluminum, polished stainless steel, or even bronze-finished faces for an additional premium look.

Can back lit channel letters be mounted on any building surface?

Back lit channel letters work best on smooth, light-colored wall surfaces that reflect the halo glow effectively. They can be mounted on stucco, EIFS, concrete, stone, and metal panels. Dark or heavily textured surfaces may reduce the halo effect. Genius Signs evaluates your building surface during the site survey and recommends the best mounting approach, including standoff distance, to maximize the halo illumination.
